The Culture of Love/La Cultura Del Amor (2022)
The Culture of Love creatively examines levels of equity between LGBTQ+ communities in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Laredo, Texas/Nuevo Laredo border region with México. Through embodied story telling, rigorously crafted choreography, and spoken text, this piece takes the audience through a series of queer love stories that explore marginalization, experimentation, friendship, and discovery.
Created by Tim Rubel in collaboration with current TRHS company members, this piece is part of a larger embodied research project that looks at quality of life differences between LGBTQ+ communities in major American urban environments and those along the U.S./México border. These performances are partially informed by surveys and interviews conducted by Rubel with community members in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Laredo/Nuevo Laredo border region, as well as by his own personal experience as a queer resident of both Laredo and San Francisco.
