Our Mission:
To support the dance ecosystem by annually commissioning professional choreographers who lack sufficient compensation for their work to be presented in a festival format. Additionally, we advocate to make the relationship between dance makers and the venues that host their performance works more sustainable and partnership-driven through discussions with stake holders and other evolving initiatives. Finally, we serve as a vehicle for the choreographic work of our founder, Tim Rubel.
Our Values:
We promote high caliber artistry and creative inquiry, as well as cultural, social, and economic equity, including freedom of speech and expression. We do this through all of our programming.
*Anti-Bigotry Statement:
We stand in support of all people regardless of who they are, how they identify, or their cultural background(s). We stand in firm opposition to all forms of racism, sexism, classism, ableism, ageism, homophobia, transphobia, bi-phobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, or any other form of discrimination, harassment, speech, or action taken which targets an individual or group of individuals based on their identity. This includes, but may not be limited to bigoted behavior based on a person’s ethnic/national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, genetic information, religious affiliation, political affiliation, citizenship, or any other identifying factor. We further affirm that expressions of dissent or those that criticize the actions of an individual, group of individuals, organization, or political entity shall not be construed as bigotry. We uphold all civil liberties and constitutional rights, as doing so is necessary to combat bigotry. Any Human Shakes employee, independent contractor, volunteer, or patron who is found after, if warranted, a careful and law abiding investigation, to have committed an act of bigotry while carrying out their work duties or participating in our programming, will be appropriately held accountable and may be terminated from employment or prohibited from further participation in our programs.
*Due to the nature of our work, there will be times when specific physical or intellectual abilities are necessary to complete tasks for which an individual is employed or contracted. Similarly, we may choose to produce dance works which have intentionally been cast with performers of specific identities for artistic purposes. Instances like these shall not be construed as acts of bigotry or discrimination.
